Plan To Grill This Winter? 4 Tips To Safeguard Your Propane And You

Posted on: 23 November 2020

Winter is almost here. Luckily, that doesn't mean that you need to put your propane grill away. You still have some time to get some grilling done. In fact, with the right precautions, you can continue grilling right through the winter. Here are some precautions to take that will help you continue to grill, even after the snow arrives.

Keep Grill Near Your Home

If you're going to continue grilling throughout the winter, you'll want to move your grill a little closer to your home, especially if you're expecting snow. You don't want to slip and fall while you're outside grilling this winter. It's also a good idea to build a cover for your grill. That way, you have a protected area for your winter grilling. As an added safety warning, never move your grill into the house, even if you need an added heat source. Your grill may be powered by propane, but it's not set up to reduce CO emission, which will put your family at risk for poisoning.

Remove Snow and Ice

If you're going to be using your propane grill this winter, you'll want to take steps to keep the snow and ice away from it. The best thing to do is to keep a cover on your propane grill when it's not in use. Snow and ice can cause considerable damage to your grill, and to your propane tanks. This is especially true if ice builds up on the hoses and valves connected to your propane tank. A good winter cover will help to protect your propane grill.

Inspect the Propane Tank

If you're not going to put your propane grill in storage this winter, you'll need to inspect your tank at least once a week. This is especially important if you haven't placed a cover over your grill. Pay close attention to the hoses and valves. If you see signs of cracks or deterioration on your hoses, replace them as soon as possible. If you see any cracks in the valve gaskets, replace the propane tank immediately. It's a good idea to keep extra propane tank supplies, from a propane supply company, on hand, especially during the winter.

Store Tanks in Safe Location

If you're going to use your propane grill during the winter, you'll want to keep a few spare tanks on hand. But, you'll want to take care with the storage of those tanks. Exposure to extreme weather can ruin your tanks. To be on the safe side, store your spare propane tanks in your garage, or in a storage shed. Those areas provide protection against snow, ice and extreme cold.
